Fallen Leaf is about one mile south of the much larger Lake Tahoe, near the California-Nevada state border. It is approximately aligned north-to-south and oval in shape, measuring approximately 2.9 miles (4.6 km) on the long axis and 0.9 miles (1.4 km) on the short axis. The lake was created by at least two glaciers which traveled northward down the Glen Alpine Valley. If the glacier had continued instead of stopped, Fallen Leaf Lake would be a similar to Emerald Bay. Instead, the glacier stopped and Fallen Leaf Lake is not a Bay of Lake Tahoe, but rather a separate lake. A terminal moraine is visible at the north end of the lake on the northeast edge.

How To Prepare For Your Fallen Leaf Vacation?
I like the idea of taking winter vacations Fallen Leaf because it can be a way to enjoy the snow and take a break from trying to live normal daily life while fighting with it. Snow is beautiful but not if you're sitting on the highway for three hours watching it fall and snarl traffic, preventing you from getting home. One of my favorite winter vacations was the time we went to Vermont to ski and snowshoe, and even though I was certainly cold, it didn't bother me as much because I was doing things that were fun. I wasn't waking up in the cold and heading out to work in the dark, feeling like my blood would freeze before I ever reached a warm building.
